No doubt the viral and the awareness were successful however how much have sales improved ? What I like to see is a link between the sales deltas and the awareness spikes and the long term trends on sale revenue following these campaigns.

Interesting point Nicholas
Apparently not as today, news breaks that Old Spice sales have dropped 7% since the campaign started and critics are out in force talking about how viral marketing doesn’t equate to sales. Just posted up the follow up post

Thank you for the response. I wasnt aware of the sales drop but I am aware that the harsh reality of the internet is that you can be Click Rick and Penny Poor. Eyeballs rarely equate to sales and brand awareness is no quick fire delivery for increasing revenue.
However , when I ask my male friends if they will be buying Old Spice the answer is a resounding. No.

Good point raised on the sale metrics. I have followed the campaign at a distance and thought it was sensational too. Although I have not rushed to buy the product itself, I have wondered how the stuff smells and I know for certain that the next time I follow my girlfriend into Boots I will want to try OldSpice out. I don’t know how many people will admit to having been influenced or even be aware of it, but to me is a question of going back to what the objectives of the campaign have been and whether they will be met or not.
Perhaps their current market share was shrinking and they though to appeal to a younger audience…Perhaps their data shows women buy OldSpice more than men…..
To be honest I really don’t know, but what is clear to me is that this campaign has showed us new ways of reaching people faster and cheaper and this is existing news for us all.
