The Better Business Cases Foundation and Practitioner Training course provides a systematic approach to business case development. Better Business Cases qualifications are fully accredited by the APMG, on behalf of the HM Treasury who also recommend completing Better Business Case qualifications in order to gain accreditation. The Better Business Case Foundation and Practitioner training course content is centred around The Five Case Model, which is the UK government’s best practice plan for making efficient and effective business decisions. This would include creating and keeping to clear and concise goals and objectives to ensure you know what you expect in return from making that investment. The Five Case Model hence provides a step by step approach to developing a business case as follows:
The foundation training course is the first step in developing understanding of business change propositions. The Better Business Case qualification will confirm that you possess the required knowledge and understanding of the guidance in order to produce a business case based around the Five Case Model, working alone or within a group.
The practitioner training course will confirm that you possess knowledge of the theory of the Five Case Model and can apply this in order to develop and present a business case. A practitioner candidate should begin to apply the model in everyday practice.
This course is highly recommended for anyone within a field that deals with business plans and proposals for spending. This would include directors of finance, accounting officers and even project managers if they have that responsibility.
This course requires a reasonable amount of study before the course starts. You will receive the information as a PDF which will take you up to 10 hours to go through and understand. The first PDF document is the Better Business Cases Workbook and the second document is the Green Book Guidance on Public Sector Business Cases Using The Five Case Model.
During the course, you will be given tasks which need to be completed at home every day. This is to further increase the learning retention and make sure you understand all the information taught during all the sessions.
The Better Business Cases Foundation exam is a multiple choice paper which has 50 questions. The pass mark is 50% or 25/50 and it lasts 40 minutes.
The Better Business Cases practitioner exam lasts for 2 and a half hours and is an open book examination. There are a total of 4 questions in the paper which each have 20 marks assigned to them. You have to achieve at least 40/80 of the total marks to pass the exam.
