What is Scrum and why is it important?

Scrum is an agile framework for managing projects that is becoming popular in business due to its simplicity and ease of use. The lightweight process allows for a flexible project that is always open to change and is seen as a sought after alternative to other rigid project management strategies.

While some projects suit a rigid framework, others are more successful when fluid, and Scrum is a great framework for Agile projects.

The Scrum Process

Scrum Projects follow this process:

Scrum Agile Project Management

Product Backlog

The Product Backlog  is the list of all the project requirements. At a sprint planning meeting, the Product Owner decides with the Scrum Team which are the highest-priority items that should be committed to the Sprint Backlog.

Sprint Backlog

The Sprint Backlog is a list of the highest-priority requirements that the Scrum Team can commit to achieving during the course of a sprint. The Scrum Team usually decides which items make it to the Sprint Backlog depending on the priorities set out by the Product Owner and how long they think each item will take.

Sprint

The Sprint is the main part of the Scrum process and can be anything from a day to a month. During the Sprint, the Sprint Backlog is maintained by the ScrumMaster to detail which tasks have been completed and how long the rest of the tasks will take. Daily Spring meetings are used to keep the Sprint on track and any problems are delivered to the ScrumMaster to solve. If the Sprint is running behind then items can be removed from the Sprint Backlog. A Sprint burndown chart is used to make sure there is enough time to finish all items during a sprint.

Sprint Review

The Sprint Review occurs at the end of a Sprint and is used to evaluate the Sprint and update the Product Backlog accordingly. The Scrum process continues as a cycle of Sprints until the product is complete and working.

Scrum Roles

Product Owner

The Scrum Product Owner represents the customer in a Scrum Team and maintains the Product Backlog according to the interests of the Stakeholders. The Product Owner is responsible for adding requirements, prioritising requirements and planning releases. Scrum Product Owner certification is important to ensure the Product Owner is aware of and can carry out their responsibilities.

Scrum Team

The Scrum Team carries out the development of a product. They are usually self-organised and cross functional but are facilitated by the Product Owner and ScrumMaster. The Scrum Team actually analyse, design, develop, test and document the product. It is beneficial for Team members to be trained as ScrumMasters so that they fully understand the process they are involved in.

Scrum Master

The Scrum Master is responsible for making sure the Scrum Team is following the Scrum process. In place of the project manager, the Scrum Master organises the daily meetings, removes obstacles for the Scrum team, supports the Product Owner, and ensures the team is free of distractions and impediments. Scrum Master certification is necessary to ensure the ScrumMaster knows and is able to carry out their responsibilities.

Consider Scrum if you need a more flexible approach to project management or believe your software development is failing because your process is too rigid.

Benefits of Scrum Certification

On completing one of our Scrum courses, delegates receive certification as either a Certified Scrum Master or Certified Scrum Product Owner. Certification grants access to two years’ membership to the Scrum Alliance which provides additional resources and information for Scrum professionals. So, call us on 01273 622272 to book your place on one of the courses and become Scrum Certified.
