Project Management Tips

prince-2-logoToday we’ve launched a complete guide to PRINCE2 Processes and Themes in our free resources section, which will prove a valuable source of information for Project Managers.

This post provides some valuable tips about the interpersonal and organisational skills you’ll need as a Project Manager.

Our Introduction to Project Management, PRINCE2 Foundation and PRINCE2 Practitioner training courses explore these areas in more detail

Stay calm:

Your job as a project manager is to give a sense of organisation and direction to a group, the result of which should be a more efficient and well thought out project. The ability to stay calm is vital, you need to be able to think quickly and clearly under pressure and not get too overwhelmed and make rash decisions.

Delegate efficiently:

Recognise the strengths and weaknesses of your team members and delegate accordingly. There is no point having your accounting expert in charge of IT maintenance as there is a clear misfit and you would be far better served in playing to their strengths and giving them a chance to fulfil their potential. Whoever you delegate to should be the person who is most suited to that job. Effective Delegation training course

Don’t be afraid to make changes:

If something isn’t working, change it. There is no point in continuing with a line of action, which you may have even initially implemented yourself, if it is clearly not working and is only serving to undermine the project as a whole. It is far better to swallow your pride and backtrack a little now and then rather than continuing with something that could lead to the failure of the project as a whole. Create a happy working environment:

If people feel comfortable and at ease in an environment then they are far more likely to work to their full potential. Studies have shown that a person’s quality of work and general performance are almost always increased if that person feels comfortable and happy with their job.

Constructive criticism only:

Criticism is a necessary tool that should be utilised in the workplace, too negative or unwarranted criticism however is not. Any complaints or observations you wish to level at a team member should always be genuine and helpful. It is not that you are telling them off it more that you are giving advice as to how they could improve, you are helping them out.
