We shot this short video interview with Claire Stokoe (@killer_bunnie) last year, and then forgot about it!
We discovered it lurking on the office iMac this week and decided to unleash it! Claire explains why Brand Monitoring using Social Media is so important – and gives some great tips on how to do it. A full transcript of the video is below.

Why Brand Monitor – Transcript
Colin – We are here today with our Social Media expert Claire Stokoe. We would like to ask you; why is it so important to monitor your brand online using social media? How do you go about doing that?
Claire – I think the main thing is not to miss anything. Everybody knows about the ‘United Brakes Guitars’ case, where they just didn’t listen and it ended up costing them an absolute fortune. And those things may seem quite rare; the majority of companies are getting hit, in some respect, just at a smaller level. It doesn’t have to be the editor of TechCrunch saying something bad about Comcast, it could be Ethel down the road who’s had a problem with BT. I think if they don’t listen, something can become public in twitter, grow a dramatic amount and then peter out within a couple of hours. Whereas that doesn’t happen in traditional press, so they really need to keep a handle on it. Also for good things that are happening, I think a lot of companies don’t get back to people who are saying fantastic stuff about them and making free videos.
Colin – So you need to capitalise on the good stuff?
Claire – Yes absolutely, don’t look at it as looking for negative points. Definitely looking for avenues to create content around as well.
Colin – So worst case scenario; there is negative stuff about you and people are complaining online, what’s the best way to handle all of that, from a social media perspective?
Claire – I would suggest not going through the lengthy avenue of going through the Ad department, spent three weeks trying to decide what to say. A good way is to respond in exactly the same way that they have done it. So with the Dave Carroll case I think United Airlines should have written a song or responded in a video. I think that would have got them a hell of a lot more credibility than doing everything behind the scenes. So respond in kind and publicly, and not be too worried because they need to do something.
