2009 was the year that businesses really started to wake up to the power of Social Media, and it’s potential to attract and engage customers.
With a staggering 400 million users, Facebook is one of the key places your business needs a presence – and for this you need to create a Facebook Fan Page!
Facebook don’t make it immediately obvious where to go to create a Business Fan Page when you log in, so we’ve put together this step-by-step guide.
What you do with your Fan Page once you’ve created it is just as important, and you can learn how to make the most of your new page on our Social Media training course.
OK – let’s get started:
since writing this post Facebook has changed the way you create business facebook pages. Now it is almost impossible to find!! so you will all be asking.
Well, we have found the simplest way around the problem of digging around for it so don’t worry read on -
1. You will need to be logged in to your Facebook account in order to create a page. If you don’t already have a Facebook account you need to set one up. Just go to www.facebook.com and follow the instructions.
Tip: Once you’ve created your Fan Page you will automatically become the Administrator of it. If your personal Facebook account isn’t something you want your clients to see (e.g. drunken photos etc…!) then you might want to create a separate profile on Facebook for business purposes!
2. OK – so you’ve got a Facebook account and you’re logged in to it. Now you cut and paste this into your browser http://www.facebook.com/pages/learn.php while still logged onto the account that you want to administrate your page or just click on my link! -
..
.
…and then hit the “Create a Page” button
Create a facebook fan page
.
3. Now you need to choose an appropriate business area for your page, and give your page a name.
Choose the most appropriate business sector or area from the drop down lists available (note, you can also create a page for a specific product or service as well as your business itself) and give your page a name – use the name of your business or product.
.
.
If you want a bit of time to make sure your page is perfect before you publish it, check the “do not make page publicly visible” box.
Hit “Create Page”
Congratulations – you’ve now got a Facebook Fan Page for your business!
Note that your name will not be reflected in the url of your page – you need 25 fans before you can do that. Find out how to do this on our blog post – How to Set a Short URL for your Facebook Fan Page to learn the simplist way to change it.
So – you’ve got a Fan Page – hurrah! But at the moment it’s looking pretty spartan – something like this…
So – you’ll want to get some content on there FAST!
Hover over the question mark where your picture should be and hit “Change Picture” upload a profile picture for your business – this is usually your logo, but any picture that represents you will do.
To start with, you’re only given two options – “Wall” and “Info”
The Wall is just the same as your normal Facebook profile wall – you can post comments, links to articles (e.g. your blog) and anything else you want.
The Info section can contain information about your business. Click on the Info tab – there’s nothing there!! So hit “Edit Information” and add some interesting information about your business (think about what your clients want to know)
If you hit the “+” on the tabs you also have the option to add Photos, Discussions, Videos and Events – add all of these and your Fan Page will have a wealth of information for your clients.
To learn more about how to make the best of your Facebook Fan Page and how best to promote it to your customers and GET FANS, you might want to attend our Social Media course!
Facebook also have a PDF product guide for pages.
We get asked this question more that you would think!
Once you’ve first created your Fan Page and have navigated away from it back to your normal Facebook profile, it’s easy to lose it!!
To navigate back to your page from your normal facebook account, you’ll need to click on the Ads and Pages button in the grey bar at the bottom of the page – it looks like this:
![]()
UPDATE!! – As part of its 6th birthday Facebook has updated its interface! The “Ads & Pages” button now appears in the main navigation on the left
You’ll then be taken to the Pages dashboard where you can edit all of the settings for your page.
Simply click on ‘View Page’ to go back to your Fan Page and add more content.
Once you’ve created a Facebook Fan page, not many people are going to find it unless you tell them where it is.
They can of course find you if they search for your company name on Facebook, but it would also be nice to be able to send people a nice short URL that they’ll be able to remember.
The URL’s Facebook gives you by default are a bit long winded. Ours was www.facebook.com/pages/Silicon-Beach-Training/150912562754 but we shortened shortened it to www.facebook.com/SiliconBeach
