What is CSS? A Simple Definition

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets, which are used by web developers to avoid having to apply style attributes to every page element. In this way, it is possible to cleanly separate content (in the HTML) from the styles (in the CSS).

One or more CSS stylesheets can be attached to any web site or page by adding a simple reference in the of the HTML page. The stylesheet contains details on how each page element will be formatted - for instance paragraph content will be verdana, black, 12 pt, or Header 1 will be Arial, 16pt and navy blue.

Once a stylesheet is applied, designers can simply mark up their HTML with each section linked to a style, without having to define the colour, size and font for their text every time. This also means that if you want to change the design of your site without having to go through and update all of your HTML pages, you can simply update your stylesheets and the content will update automatically.

CSS can also be used to control the positioning and layout of elements on a page.

We also provide private and in-company CSS courses. Call us on 01273 622272 to discuss.
