Derby

Derby is a unitary authority area of the east midlands of the England with a population of around 248,700 according to 2011 census. It is situated on the banks and lower valley of the River Derwent. The city is surrounded by Yorkshire coalfields, Derbyshire clay lands, Trent Valley Washlands and Derbyshire peak fringe. Earlier the city was the borough of the Danelaw and then merged into the Kingdom of Mercia in July 917. The city derived its name from deor, a Danish word means Village of the Deer.

The market town grew strongly during the industrial era and famous for one of the birthplaces of the industrial revolution. The first water powered silk mill in the England was built in the 17th century and later on, it was abandoned as a revenge of stealing the secrets of manufacturing. The city flourished after an establishment of car and aircraft factory by Rolls Royce in 1907. It also became development centre for manufacturing of rails. The city served as a first wireless club of the country after formation of Derby Wireless Club in 1911. The city suffered damage during the First World War when German air bombers attacked the city resulting in the death of several people. New development projects for residential, retail and industrial were implemented on a large scale after the end of Second World War in 1945.

The city is home to two biggest engineering manufacturers, Toyota Motor Corporation and Rolls Royce. Apart from these, the major employers in the city are Midland Railway, Bombardier Transportation, Core Design, Midland Co-operative Society and Royal Crown Derby.

Education

Derby follows two tier educational system with plenty of primary and secondary schools and no middle schools. The main campus of the University of Derby is located outside the city centre easily accessible by the public transportation system. Derby is also famous among the deaf community for its largest cultural centre. The Royal School for the Deaf was built in the city to provide manual education to the deaf people In British Sign Language.
