Chester

Chester is situated on the Dee River, in the North West of England with a population of around 118,200 in 2011 census. The city is surrounded by heathland, forest, marsh and wetland habitats. The city got its status in 1541. It is the most populous settlement and walled city in Cheshire. The city is also known as one of the best preserved walled cities in the United Kingdom and has a large number of Victorian and Medieval buildings. The city traced its root back to the Roman period. The city was founded in 79 AD as a Roman Fort and also known as Deva during the rule of Emperor Vespasian. After the withdrawal of Romans, the prosperity of the city fell which again raised with the rule of Normans. During this time, the city had become a prosperous port and center of the shipping trade. The Chester Castle and famous rows were also built and the charter was granted made the city as a bishopric.

The city introduced new roads, railways, and canals during the industrial revolution. The wealth of the city grew with the presence of large cattle market and two railway stations responsible for providing the vast majority of skilled workers. The Grosvenor Museum and Chester Town Hall were also built in this period, marked the perfect example of Victorian architecture.

The city faced a crisis at the end of Second World War and large areas of farmland were developed as residential areas on the outskirts of the city in 1950. But these new developments caused a concern to the city and its layout was again changed dramatically. A bypass was built around the city center to avoid the problems of traffic congestion in 1964. The city changed its focus to preserving the historic buildings and the city conservation area was designated in 1969.
