Process Simulation with Simul8 Training

Please call for a quote

This four day Process Simulation with Simul8 training course requires no previous knowledge or experience of process simulation. The Process Simulation course will cover the overall structure and management of a simulation project and will take you to a high level of knowledge of the industry standard simulation software, Simul8. The process simulation training course will be based around hands-on use of Simul8 software.

A process simulation is an animated computer model that mimics the operation of a real or proposed system, such as the day-to-day operation of a hospital department, an office, an assembly line, or a call centre.

The model can include all the complexity normally seen in work processes, such as changing resource availability, different work types, and the complex interactions between employees and machines. Process simulation also builds in the randomness you would see in real life. For example, it doesn't always take exactly the same time to do the same job, and patients or customers don’t arrive at regular intervals during the day.

With process simulation you can predict the performance of a planned system or test improvements to a current system. You can try out many ideas – all without the cost, time and risk required to test them in the real organisation. You then have a high level of confidence that investment in your new or improved system will give you the level of performance you desire. The animated model of your new system can then be used to gain buy-in from management or stakeholders

Process Simulation with Simul8 Training Course Content

Introduction - What is simulation?

Simulation project structure

  • Problem formulation
  • Steps in project & expected timescales
  • Data collection (and how to handle uncertainties)
  • Documentation
  • Project closure
  • Hints & tips

Basic functions

  • Simulation building blocks (work centres, resources, work items, work entry and exit points)
  • Building our first model
  • Simul8 basic controls
  • Editing and copying objects
  • Setting the clock – model operating times and duration (warm up & data collection)
  • Basic results – results, charts & trials

Intermediate functions

  • Travel times
  • Queue graphics
  • Adding required resources
  • Resource shift patterns, pooled resources
  • Information store – variables & spreadsheets, creating user input sheets and dialogs
  • Distributions – types of distribution (and when to use them), time-dependent distributions
  • Work item expiry (“use by” times/dates)
  • Work item labels – use to control timings and routings
  • Assembling or dividing work items
  • Work centre options: graphics, priority, breakdowns, changeovers, shifts
  • Model debugging and validation

Advanced functions

  • Introducing Visual Logic – basic functions and trigger points
  • Use of visual logic to set variables and labels, adjust route, create work items, control resources, control batching and assembly, record information in information store or external files
  • Jobs matrix and cycle matrix
  • High quantity work centres
  • Local variables and object variables
  • Conveyer systems & vehicles
