One of the strengths of Six Sigma is the structure of belts to show level of achievement and capability. In all cases the training should be backed up by real experience on projects and at Six Sigma Black Belt level this is mandatory.

White Belt Training

This is the most basic level and many people don’t recognise it. We would recommend a two day Introduction to Six Sigma Concepts and Processes. No prerequisites.

Yellow Belt Training

Six Sigma Yellow Belt Training is for somebody who is or going to be a Team Member so they need to understand the key processes and some of the basic tools. No prerequisites.

Green Belt Training

Six Sigma Green Belt training is for somebody who will be a Team Leader. They need to have a good understanding of the processes and many of the tools. They will understand a number of key statistical techniques but not be an expert in their application. This 5 day course is very intensive.

Black Belt Training

Six Sigma Black Belt training is for delegates who are leading or supporting Six Sigma projects on a continuous basis – it is their full time job. They may also be providing internal training programmes for Green Belts. They need to thoroughly understand Six Sigma processes and a wide range of statistical and process improvement tools.

Master Black

This is an executive level position that is advising the board on the development and implementation of Six Sigma across the organisation. Master Black Belts will also be managing the Black Belts, in some cases they will also train the Black Belts, they will have a lot of management expertise in addition to their expertise in all aspects of Lean Six Sigma.

Some Quick Results: Make sure people can see the benefits early on, this will help you create an enthusiastic team. Look for simple processes that will have an instant effect on productivity (reducing defects, increasing cycle time or reducing waste)

Work on Relationships: Polish your communication skills and create strong bonds and good relationships with all of the key players in the company. Find out what makes people tick and use this, ask about family, their hobbies ect. People are much more willing to cooperate if they have a good relationship with someone, it will make them feel more part of a team.

Don’t ignore the small problems: Not everything is in the book, look our for small problems that can be solved particularly individual problems for process owners. Little things can have big impact, and solving simple problems can have a great impact of the projects success.

Show Clear Financial Savings: As soon as you can show financial savings you will have most people’s attention. It will encourage all parties and give them a sense of achievement as well as a reason for participating. It will help them believe in the process.

Create an Implementation Team: Again communication is key. Regular meetings are essential to aid communication between departments. Process owners can agree on completion dates this will aid smooth transitions from department to department. Regular meetings are also essential so that all departments are aware of any problems that arise and can discuss solutions.

Distribute Control Charts: It is very effective to distribute control charts to a wide audience. Six Sigma Black Belts can use the control chart distribution to inform departments and process owners of their achievements and outstanding action to be taken.

Monitor Process: Scorecards or dashboards tracking the project team’s primary metric is the best way to monitor process. It will enable team leaders to identify defect rates, cycle times and their levels and take the necessary steps to bring them in line with the system. The scorecard or dashboard is also useful at an executive level to inform of progress.

Finally – Keep optimistic. Do not get discouraged by minor setbacks, they will be inevitable. No change process is without resistance or error. Six Sigma is all about solving problems; some are going to be easier than others. Develop good interpersonal skills to build trusting relationships with co-workers and gain their respect and cooperation. Be persistent and patient and the rewards will speak for themselves.
