Publishing your web pages

Part 7.4: Publishing all of your pages

Now we’ve got the beginnings of a proper site with multiple pages, we have more than one file to upload. All this is covered in our comprehensive All this is covered in our comprehensive Dreamweaver training course. Once you have mastered all these techniques you may want to attend our Advanced Dreamweaver training course.

Rather than going through each page one by one and publishing it, Dreamweaver can automatically work out which pages have been updated since you last published your site to the web and replace the old pages with the new ones.

To do this:

1: Select “Site > Synchronize Sitewide” from the main menu

2: A new box will appear. In the “Synchronise” field, select “Entire Site”. This will actually read “Entire Silicon Beach Training Site” or whatever you called your site when you first made it.

3: In the “Direction” field, select “Put newer files to remote” and select “Preview”

4: Dreamweaver will connect to the remote (live) site and check which of the pages you are working on locally are new, or have been updated since you last published the site. It should list the index page (which we’ve updated) and the new About Us and Site Map pages which are newly created

5: Dreamweaver will also list the template file “index.dwt” as a new file – however since this is just a template that we create new pages from locally, id doesn’t need to be uploaded to the internet. Right click on “Templates\index.dwt” and select “Ignore”

6: Now click OK and Dreamweaver will upload the new and updated pages to your site.

This may seem a bit like overkill for such a small site, but with a very large site with hundreds of pages (like http://www.siliconbeachtraining.co.uk) this process can be invaluable, as it can become hard to remember what you have created or updated since you last published.
