Colin – We’re here today with our lead trainer for PRINCE2 and MSP- Claudine. We are just going to ask you a few questions, one of the questions that we get asked a lot is – What is MSP and how is it different from PRINCE2? We understand that PRINCE2 is about managing projects, so what’s MSP and how is it different from PRINCE2?
Claudine – MSP stands for Managing Successful Programmes, this is a method that is applied to programme management largely for transformational change.
Colin – How is a programme different to a project?
Claudine – A programme is usually where you have multiple projects that are being managed towards an end goal/ end vision. Programme management is at a far higher level than project management. You’ll notice that outcomes for projects are fairly well defined. Occasionally, programme outcomes are not very well defined at the start and tend to evolve as the programme progresses. So there is quite a difference in the way in which they are managed. Projects tend to be more defined, programmes often aren’t and therefore there is a process by which you can actually manage programmes effectively using MSP.
Colin – And the MSP course structure is quite similar to PRINCE2 course?
Claudine – Correct, the first 3 days are spent going through foundation material and at the end of which is a foundation exam. Day 4 is all about exam preparation and techniques with, of course, day 5 including a bit of study time and the final exam.
