PRINCE2 2009 update

prince-2-logoAll of our public PRINCE2 Courses are delivered using the new PRINCE2 2009 manual. If you’re moving from using PRINCE2 2005 to PRINCE2 2009, you’ll need to know what’s changed, so we’ve summarised the main differences below:

There are a number of changes from the PRINCE2 2005 edition manual to the new 2009 edition. These are as follows:

  • Most of the Processes remain the same with some amendment of the sub-process names and the addition or removal of other sub- processes
  • The Planning Process is now a Theme instead of a Process.
  • The Components are renamed Themes, and are reduced to 7, namely:
    • Business Case
    • Organisation
    • Plans
    • Progress
    • Risk
    • Quality
    • Changes

A new section called Principles covers the following:

  • Continued business justification
  • Learn from experience
  • Defined roles and responsibilities
  • Manage by stages
  • Manage by exception
  • Focus on products
  • Tailor to suit the project environment

The Appendices have been updated to include the following:

A. Product Descriptions
B. Governance
C. Roles and Responsibilities
D. Product Based Planning Example
E. Checklist Glossary Further information

There has also been an update to the management products in Appendix A to bring these in line with the new Themes and Principles. The number of Product Descriptions has been reduced to 26.

All of the above changes can be viewed in the 2009 manual changes file

Examination format implications

The examination format of the PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner examinations has largely remained the same in terms of content, though there are some small changes regarding timing and marking of the examinations as follows:-

PRINCE2 Foundation Examination

  • Multiple choice examination
  • 80 questions per paper
  • 38 marks or above required to pass
  • 1 hour allowed
  • Some negative style questions will be allowed in the examinations although negative marking will not be introduced
  • Answer sheets will change to the same format as the practitioner ones so they can be scanned when received by APMG and feedback sent to ATOs to detail the candidate marks and a breakdown by syllabus areas

PRINCE2 Practitioner Examination

  • No change to presentation – there are still 3 booklets for candidates to use containing the scenario and additional information, questions and answer sheets as per the current system
  • Objective testing examination
  • 9 questions per paper with 12 marks available per question – all question items worth 1 mark making the total number of marks available per paper 10
  • 2.5 hours allowed (no reading time has been added)
  • Open book exam (manual only – same rules will apply as for 2005 exams)
