If you’ve heard about Social Networking and Social Media and how amazing it all is but you still don’t understand why you need to do it then read on. With the Google Caffeine update imminent it’s even more important to get started. If you need help you could enrol on a Social Media Course in Brighton, Sussex, (next one January 21st) – or even our Search Engine Optimisation Course, also crucial if you want to maximise your online achievements.
Social media and social networking are here to stay. Online marketers need to add it to the mix. Companies that don’t jump on board will be left behind. It is not a fad or a passing phase. Businesses are finding new ways to use Social Media for marketing all the time, we are still going to see lots of new developments and ideas, it’s time to listen, learn and experiment.
It can be free if you do it yourself, however it does take time. You may find you need others within your business or organisation to help you. You could employ someone part-time or you could pay a company to do it for you. How ever you choose to include social media in your marketing plans you at least need to understand it.
Search engine rankings can take a lot of time to achieve. Using Social Media will speed the process up. In fact if your competitors are using it well they will soon overtake you. You will start to see improved traffic from sources other than the search engines. You can use Social Media to get your blog posts, or web site noticed straight away. If you haven’t already got a blog it’s time to get one, and social media will give you the means to market your blog.
There are many social media sites to choose from each offering different services; news sites, book-marking sites and networking sites. It’s worth experimenting, take note of your successes by watching your traffic sources and repeat what works for you. Blogging is an extremely powerful (and free) tool which we run workshops on in Brighton.
If you’re new to blogging and social media it can be daunting, it takes time to build up followers, fans and connections. With a little time and effort it is possible to establish yourself and you will hopefully gain some social media savvy followers. The more you use social media the more you will understand what works and what doesn’t.
If you are doing it right Social Media will increase your number of inbound links to your site. The links that result from social media success can get your new posts ranking very high with search engines almost immediately, so you can enjoy more traffic from the generated links as well as more traffic from the Search Engines.
You can create your own links to your posts by using social bookmarking sites, networking sites, twitter and commenting on blogs.
Once you know a social media audience pretty well, you can provide the content they are looking for.
Our next Social Media Course is running on 21st January, book now to avoid disappointment.

D. Nielsen says:
In 1999 a wise group of internet visionaries nailed 95 theses on the virtual front door of the internet. They called their movement the Cluetrain Manifesto (do a Google search) and here are their first 10 theses:
1. Markets are conversations.
2. Markets consist of human beings, not demographic sectors.
3. Conversations among human beings sound human. They are conducted in a human voice.
4. Whether delivering information, opinions, perspectives, dissenting arguments or humorous asides, the human voice is typically open, natural, uncontrived.
5. People recognize each other as such from the sound of this voice.
6. The Internet is enabling conversations among human beings that were simply not possible in the era of mass media.
7. Hyperlinks subvert hierarchy.
8. In both internetworked markets and among intranetworked employees, people are speaking to each other in a powerful new way.
9. These networked conversations are enabling powerful new forms of social organization and knowledge exchange to emerge.
10. As a result, markets are getting smarter, more informed, more organized. Participation in a networked market changes people fundamentally.
The Cluetrain Manifesto accurately predicted the societal and market changes we’re now seeing with the power of Facebook fan pages, blogging, Twitter and the millions of pages of discussion boards and blog comments powerfully indexed and available via Google and others. When we are interested in a product or service, we search, post, tweet, or blog about potential options and we rely on other humans – not the stale flat voice of corporate marketing – to guide us to the best one.
“Inbound Marketing” is the best guide I’ve seen for how your organization can tell their story with a human voice and how to spread that story using the full power of the internet. Brian and Dharmesh simplify the concepts of blogging, search engine optimization, and the social media tools that can connect your company with people who are interested in what you offer.

I agree with D. Nielsen’s comment above. The book “Inbound Marketing” is absolutely the best guide I’ve ever seen about combining social media with the rest of your inbound marketing to get more leads. It’s a must-read. I am also glzad to see an article like this. Too many scammers out there.
