Before you go down the route of training and accreditation to become a Business Analyst, you’ll want to know a little more about the role – this short article provides a summary of what a Business Analyst is and what the role entails:

What is a Business Analyst?

A business analyst is the business equivalent of a therapist. It is their reponsibility to find the root causes of a company’s problems; to recognise weakness; to identify opportunities: suggest changes and to guide the organisation into making them. It’s a bit like lying a patient down and asking about its upbringing.

Business analysts come in many guises. Some are from IT backgounds. They help to ensure that a company’s information systems and are actually useful. They are system analysts who have had to learn to communicate information well to team members. Some are project managers who need constantly to see the bigger picture. They will take a company-wide view, communicate across many different management teams and bring the disparate parts together for the common good of the business.

To do this clearly requires a certain amount of character and diplomacy. The job involves a lot of liaising with peers. So, while academic qualifications are important, business analysts also need to show that they are people centred, are able to take on leadership responsibilities and have an entrepreneurial flair.

Good business analysts need to be excited about business and have a good understanding of the industry. Opportunities for business analysts range from new graduate positions within established teams to more senior roles requiring several years of experience within the specific industry.

A Business Analyst position can also be a good springboard to other high-profile positions within a company.

Business Analysts work across a wide range of roles enabling them to pick up a varied skill set. It’s a job that can open up a lot of doors.
