A regular blog is the must have accessory of any Social Media savvy organisation and a subject we frequently blog about: see How to Write a Great Blog Post, Keeping your Blog Regular, Blog Post Ideas and The Art of Generous Blogging. So everyone’s blogging these days right? Our new hands-on blogging course could be the first step if you’re new to blogging and have yet to realise its huge potential as a marketing tool.
Microblogging is a huge craze at the moment e.g. the million tidbits of information posted of Twitter each day. However, blogging using a platform such as WordPress is important too – primarily because it can add value by creating useful content, but for many other reasons too. For small and large businesses alike, blogging is a cheap way to create a huge impact; if you haven’t yet joined the all-mighty Blogosphere, read these five reasons why you should!
Not convinced yet? Listen to Seth Godin and Tom Peters talk about why blogging is “the best damn marketing tool… [they have] ever had“:
If you’re posting regular and good quality content, your blog is a great way to keep existing customers coming back, and to attract the following of prospective customers. It acts as a useful tool in establishing your brand, and you could even feature excepts of your latest blogs in email newsletters. It’s also a way to establish and sustain customer relationships; your can provide useful tips and encourage feedback; the informal tone allows a welcoming forum for discussion.
Your blog can create valuable content that you can link to on social networks like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. This is much better than annoying self-promotional tweets and posts, and the link is far more likely to get clicked on and re-tweeted.
The exposure of blogging regularly and establishing a loyal readership can open up many other opportunities. You can establish yourself as an thought leader in your specific field and encourage blog subscriptions or even be invited to speak at important industry events. When done well and without overt self-promotion, blogging is an invaluable PR tool.
The whole point of blogging may be to add value by creating a useful resource. But once you’re established don’t be afraid to create an occasional sales-related post e.g. to announce a product or offer that is new and link to the related page on your website. As stated in #1, this is an excellent way to get feedback from your customers.
Google – and the other search engines – rank their listings depending on various factors such as clear HTML tags and titles (e.g. most important keywords in H1 headings), back-links from other URLS (this makes you look important!), unique content and regular updates. Therefore your blog is an excellent SEO resource: it’s an easy and effective way to ensure you’re regularly updating your site with new content and relevant keywords, as well as hopefully encouraging to back-links from others.
I hope that I’ve encouraged you to get blogging! If you’re an established business blogger, are there any other key reasons that you’d add?

I heard a great phrase that BLOG should stand for ‘Better Links On Google’, which kind of makes sense. The blog is probably going to be one of the most updated pages on your site, so may well be the landing page for most people so MAKE AN IMPRESSION is my advice.

Nice article. The first link that comes up on Google when I search anything relevant to my work and company is my Blog and my Social Media sites not my website. That totally gives the complete picture.
Few ideas on blogs and social media presence taken from my blog: http://www.itvibes.com/blog/archives/networking-is-the-new-branding
Look forward to your thoughts and comments on it.
