Here are seven ways to become a better manager:

Practice good Leadership.

This is a fundamental aspects to becoming a better manager, the ability to inspire, initiate and organise . This area of management relies on a manager’s self confidence and the confidence they have to direct their team.

Always try to fix the problem, don’t blame others.

Take responsibility when things go wrong, landing the blame on someone else may create a bad working environment, or your employees moral and self esteem may be affected, making it harder to bring out the best in them. By all means discuss with your team how to avoid making the same mistakes again.

Tell people what you want, not how to do it.

People like to be independent, and certainly do not like to be belittled, especially  if they have already required the proper qualifications in the area. Explaining something that they already know will only serve to waste your’s and their time and possibly create a negative response from you team.

Manage the function, not the paperwork.

You are the leader, it is your job to have the big picture in mind and to make sure everything runs smoothly. This will be very hard to do if you find yourself bogged down with paper work. Delegate this to someone else.

Always get involved

Try and  be involved and pro active, don’t delegate all your duties away, instead relish the opportunity to work with and inspire your team, let them know your working hard too.

Learn from mistakes.

Be aware of the pitfalls and potential traps that you could fall into. Learn from your own mistakes and those of your competitors. When team members make mistakes ask them “how could we avoid this inthe future? Make it about learning.

Realize your own weaknesses.

There is no point in trying to bluff your way through, if you need to know something ask an expert. Team members need to know that the person who is in charge knows what they are doing.
