I rececntly met Sue Hadfield co-author of ‘Bounce: Use the Power of Resilience to Live the Life You Want’. The book takes a positive and dynamic approach to surviving whatever life throws at you. Life will always have its ups and downs. We all suffer similar misfortunes – bereavement, accident, illness, rejection, redundancy, debt. The key to living the life you want is how you react to the things that happen to you. the book aims to arm you with the tools to face any adversity, nothing is frightening, no problem insurmountable, every experience makes you stronger – you can keep on bouncing towards your dreams and goals.
I asked Sue if she could provide just six top tips for developing resilience and this is what she provided:
Top tips for developing Resilience:

- Think positively – try to find something positive out of every gloomy situation you find yourself in. Try saying ‘At least I didn’t ….’ or ‘I’m glad that…..’ when things aren’t going well.
- Take responsibility – don’t blame other people – or say ‘It isn’t fair….’ A miracle isn’t going to happen which will wipe out your overdraft or solve all your problems. You have to accept it is your fault/responsibility.
- Look after yourself – don’t drown your sorrows with alcohol, drugs, cigarettes or ‘comfort food’ – they won’t solve anything and will only make you feel worse and add to your problems. Get out in the fresh air instead of curling up on the sofa.
- Read about other people’s struggles – biographies of the rich and famous show it’s not what happens to you but how you react to it that counts.
- Tell someone you trust what has happened – but don’t go round telling everyone – be discreet.
- Help other people – instead of looking inward – try to do a small act of kindness everyday. Start with giving a compliment – being generous like this makes you feel better about yourself.
