Preventing Interruptions: 5 Top Tips

top-tips

If you’ve got a big project on that you’re trying to get finished, there’s nothing worse than being constantly interrupted and feeling like you’re getting nowhere.

Our 1-day Time Management training course covers a range of strategies for making sure your most important jobs get finished on time, and you can read more on the subject in our free Time Management Resources section.

In the meantime, here are our 5 top tips on how on how to prevent interruptions:

  1. Isolate yourself from others, do not put yourself in to a position where you are likely to be bothered. This can be as simple as closing you door or putting up a polite sign. If the worst comes to the worst then you may even want to work from home for a couple of days if that’s possible.
  2. If you’re able to hire an assistant (even on a temporary basis) this can be a great help. If you don’t have the budget for this, is there a colleague you can ask someone to take on some of your responsibilities for a while. Whoever you ask, make sure you give them clear instructions on who is allowed to speak to you and at what times.
  3. Make the times in which you will accept meetings or visitors clearly known. If people well enough informed then they will make it a point not to bother you at the wrong times. Consider sending round a group e-mail to the people you deal with regularly.
  4. It may be that people need to disturb you in order to reach a certain area of the building or gain access to files, if this is the case then it is in your best interests to move office or rearrange where things are kept.
  5. Make your office space a clear and organised area where there is nothing to distract you from working on your projects, the messier a desk is the harder it is to work from.

Interruptions can be the bane of any good project but with the correct techniques and organisation it is a problem that can easily be fixed.
