Thank you to everyone who entered our Movement themed photo competition. It was a huge success with perhaps the highest standard of entries we’ve ever had to our Flickr group!
A big thank you too to our judge; acclaimed Brighton photographer Jean-Luc Brouard as well as to our partners and joint competition sponsors Brighton Media Centre.
So here is our winner and runners up in video format or scroll down to see them without the musical accompaniment!
We had some great entries from near and afar but there could only be one winner so we’ll let Jean-Luc tell you about his experience deciding who should get our prize of a 2-day course (anything from Photoshop workshops to Social Media Training) and a day in Brighton Media Centre’s professional studio.
Over to Jean-Luc:
“When I was first asked by the folk at Silicon Beach to help with the judging I was initially a bit terrified at the prospect. I’m more used to being on the receiving end of photography judging than the one deciding the result. I can tell you, it’s quite a hard thing to do.
Terror aside, it was a very enjoyable experience. There were some great entries so it was hard at first to come to any decision but the actual process of looking at a cross section of other photographers’ work was very enjoyable.
Well done to the overall winner & the runners up but also well done to all the entrants. It can be a daunting decision to put your work out there to be judged so well done & thank-you to all of you for entering.
If you didn’t win this time then don’t be put off, keep shooting, keep thinking about your images & most importantly, show them to people.”
Here’s what Jean-Luc had to say about why he chose it as the winning entry:
“Waterfalls & running water are a classic but yet very pleasing subject for long exposure shots. Out of all my favourite images from the entries my eye kept coming back to this image, I really like the composition, the sharpness of the rocks with the flowing waters & darkness with the highlights.
For some reason it makes me think of a cathedral, I’d love to know where it was shot.”
Congratulations to Steven! He wins our top prize of a 2-day course of his choosing and a day in Brighton Media Centre’s studio.
Jean-Luc also chose four runners-up and had some comments about each:
“Punchy colours that compliment each other well & a fun subject. Undoubtedly technically demanding & a good illustration using high speed to freeze a moment that shows movement.
I wonder how many shots it took to get the duck in that position?”
“As someone who shoots a lot of night images, I was obviously drawn to this shot. I like the choice of composition; good to see someone not afraid to crop a well known landmark.
The London Eye compliments the star trails very well.”
“An understated yet almost painterly image, I like the subtlety of this. Just enough blur to denote the movements yet defined enough to show it’s a substance.
There are all the right ingredients here so that I knew it was a ballerina without seeing the title.”
“Another good example showing that movement can be well illustrated by capturing a split second in time rather than a long exposure.
Although some might say it goes against some of the alleged ‘rules’ of photography, I really like the way the jumping boy bisects the horizon with his body. Great expression too, just wish he had a little more left arm showing.”
So there you have it!
Once again, thank you to all who entered, to Jean-Luc Brouard for judging and to our competition partners, Brighton Media Centre. A big congratulations to our winner and runners-up as well.
Keep you eyes peeled – we will be running another photo competition very soon!
