Create an Effective LinkedIn Profile – 10 Top Tips

1. Create a Personal LinkedIn URL
A Personal URL looks better than the default one. You may want to add your LinkedIn URL to your email signature or your twitter profile etc. To change the default URL:

- Click Settings at the top right of the page
- Under Profile Settings Public Profile
- Edit your Public Profile URL to your name.
2. Personalise your Linkedin Website and Company Details
My Website/My Company etc are default titles in LinkedIn, you can change these:

- Select edit profile using the dropdown on your profile tab.
- Click websites, using the drop down, click “Other”
- Type in your website name etc.
3. Join Linkedin Groups.
The maximum amount of LinkedIn groups you can join is 50. Find LinkedIn groups relevant to your business and start using them to communicate. Your can do this in two ways:
- Discussions are good because you can start as many as you want, and get people communicating with you fast.
- Announcements are great because they usually go into your Group Members email boxes; this means they have a much better chance of being seen.
4. Take part in LinkedIn discussions – social media is all about conversation
5. Ask and Answer Questions in LinkedIn.
- Asking questions can get you feedback, knowledge and can often give you material for some great blog posts.
- Answering questions builds your reputation as an expert in your field and can be a great way of getting an introduction to someone.
6. Link your Twitter account with your LinkedIn account.
This is great if you tweet about business a lot, not so good if your tweet about drinking coffee, so only do this if your tweets are all business related. If you tweet a lot then you will most often be in the status updates fields of your contacts home page, so they’ll constantly be reminded of you.
- Select edit profile using the dropdown on your profile tab.
- Select Twitter and fill in your twitter account name.
7. Create a LinkedIn Company Page.

8. Complete your LinkedIn Profile.
LinkedIn claims that you are 40 times more likely to get found in a LinkedIn search if your profile is complete, so try and get it to 100%. The most important things to do are listed below:
- A current position.
- Two past positions.
- Education.
- Profile summary.
- A profile photo.
- Specialities.
- At least three recommendations.
9. Comment on Comments.
If someone comments, then respond to them to acknowledge their efforts.
10. Connect to your Blog to LinkedIn
If you have a word press blog you can have all your blog updates appearing in your LinkedIn profile.

- Scroll down your profile page and click Add Application
- Select WordPress and download application.
