Great writers have different styles and different methods. However, when writing for the internet (especially when starting out) there are some standards you should aim to follow to improve the quality of your content and increase readership. Famous authors may be able to get away with a very personal style and a dependence on alcohol but your blog isn’t going to last very long if you don’t make it internet friendly. If you are serious about starting a popular blog then we recommend our Blogging & Content Marketing course to get you started. We also have WordPress courses if you would like to delve deeper into creating blog sites and SEO training and Social Media training to ensure your blog posts are searchable and shareable.

This article is written by McKinley Plowman, accountants in Perth, who provide business and personal financial advice.

Written communication remains one of the most important skills for a person to possess. Writing has allowed us to communicate precise ideas that are able to be digested by the reader at their own pace. Most importantly, writing has given man the ability to communicate outside of their mortal life. It has, in a way, pushed mankind into a post-human state.

With this said it is disturbing that a lot of the population write poorly. I’ll run through some ways you can improve your writing and will focus specifically on writing in a business setting.

Use smaller words if possible

Large words sap energy from a piece of writing. Many people believe that using a big word will make them appear more intelligent to the reader and hence improve their status. This is partly true but influence doesn’t come from convincing people you are smart, it comes from making people like you.

For an illustration of how this works consider this statement.

“I met a great man at a cocktail party, when he spoke to me I felt like he was the smartest person in the room. I then met an even greater man at that party; he made me feel like I was the smartest person in the room”

By writing in a manner that doesn’t send a reader rushing to the dictionary every now and then, you have a much better chance of communicating your written ideas to a reader.

Gain some more readers by entering our blogging contest! If you win, not only will you receive a limited edition pack of Top SEO Trumps but we will also promote your article and your blog!

Break some rules

There is no need to follow all the rules of structure that you were taught at school. This is especially true with internet writing. Single word sentences are OK. Very short paragraphs are fine too.

The typical paragraph of 8-12 sentences is mostly too long and creates large blocks of text that are hard to read. If you’re reading this now, I credit it to the idea that I have not made large paragraphs which tend to scare the reader away in this modern age of very short attention spans.

Get a lot of sleep

Writing requires creativity. Being tired or hung over is the nemesis of creative thought. You should be getting at least 8 hours of good sleep each night. Without being well rested, ideas will not come to you and you will more likely suffer from writer’s block.

Write about what you are passionate about

My most expressive and readable writing comes from writing about something I care about. Ideas flow more readily onto the page and people are more likely to enjoy reading what was written. If you are finding it difficult to write about something, it will also probably be difficult to read.

Make sure you’re aware of the fine line between inspiration and plagiarism. Getting an idea and stealing an idea are very different actions.

The simple solution for this is to research what you are writing a bit more. Typically writing about things you don’t know well are the most painful experiences.

Excessive Words

Don’t pad out sentences with catchphrases and corporate speak. Writing should be punchy and to the point otherwise the text will be boring and hard to read. I’ve seen corporate memos that are written using three times the number of words that are necessary to communicate the idea.

Now that the Christmas festivities have finished and the New Years Eve hangover has fully worn off, a certain sense of deflation seems to have settled over the UK. No one’s got any money, there’s no celebrations left to look forward to and the emphasis is very much on cutting back on the booze, getting to the gym and getting early nights. However, even if you are currently in a state of detox, there’s no need to be glum because spring is just around the corner and there’s a whole range of spring festivals and events in Sussex to look forward to.

Why not learn a new skill this spring? It could be the most exciting thing you do this year! If you’re thinking of a career move in 2012, want to dust off some old skills, pick up that new talent you’ve been thinking about for a while or even flourish in your current role then training courses are the best way to start. If you want to get your creative juices flowing then our Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator courses are all perfect. If you are looking further up the career ladder or want some help in the corporate environment our range of Business and Management training courses are all very useful. Spring is not just for learning though! In your time off why not attend some of these great events…

Sussex Beer Festival takes place on 8-10 March and if you’re having a bit of a dry month at the moment then this is something to really look forward to. The festival has around 230 beers on offer, including a range of British and foreign beers, as well as other mouthwatering tipples, such as ciders, perries and wines. Tickets cost between £4 and £7, depending on the day you go, and include a free souvenir glass and programme.

The festival is an important annual event for the town and is the largest multi-art form festival in England. You can expect to find a broad selection of dance, music, art and film on the programme and a wide range of events for all the family.

At the same time as the Brighton Festival is happening, the Brighton Festival Fringe is taking place, which holds the impressive title of the third largest fringe in the world. In the past the festival has attracted audiences of up to 180,000 and had more than 625 events taking place across Brighton and Hove. Anyone can take part in the Brighton fringe, whether complete beginner or competent professional, which results in a fantastic mix of arts talent and fabulously groansome performances!

Celebration of Spring – if you have thoroughly had enough of winter by now and you’re ready for the primroses, warmth and Easter eggs of spring then no doubt you will be quite keen to celebrate its arrival. Parham House near Pulborough holds a special Celebration of Spring each year on Sunday 22 April with activities for kids and speakers, tours and sales for the adults. Tickets are £9 for adults and £4.50 for children.

There may still be a few more months of cold (possibly grey) days left until the UK starts to warm up again but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t still plenty to look forward to. With all these exciting events and festivals coming up, Sussex is certainly the place to be to welcome in the spring in 2012.

It’s 2012, a new year, and we’ve predicted what will happen in the world of search and tech. Our job will be to try and keep ahead of the trends and offer you the best and most up to date training available. What are your plans for 2012? How about starting a business? It may be the year the world is predicted to come to an end and we may be in the middle of a recession but that does not mean it isn’t a great time to start a business! In this guest post the author tells us how starting a business in the face of recession can be a good idea, and how to start the process. Starting your own business can be a daunting process, especially if you have no managerial experience. A great way to start would be to come on some of our courses and learn some new skills. It may not seem obvious but when starting your own business it is often better to have all the skills – Web Design, SEO and Management - rather than have to rely on hiring a freelancer or consultant. The more of your business you can do yourself, the more it will belong to you and follow your vision.

People often think that hard economic times are the wrong time to start a business, but many of the largest companies today got their start during the worst economic time in modern history: the Great Depression. During hard economic times, business patterns shift. People stop making their traditional purchases and look for something different. Companies that don’t adjust to this go out of business, creating opportunities for entrepreneurs with a clear vision for the future. Launching a business that succeeds during these times takes quite a bit of preparation but for those willing to put in the work, the rewards can be rich.

The first thing to do is clearly identify the product or service you’ll offer, the target audience, and your plan for success. Typically this is contained in a comprehensive business plan. A successful business plan considers every aspect of your proposed business, including products or services offered, projected prices, costs of operation, location, marketing, what need you’re filling (and the research to prove the need actually exists), business insurance, and more. If you’ll need a loan to start the business, a bank will require a copy of your business plan to evaluate your ability to repay the loan.

Just as the first three rules of buying a home are location, location, location, considering the placement of your business is critical. What other businesses are in the area? If you plan to open a cake decorating business, are there already two bakeries and another cake decorator in the area? What are the demographics of the area, including the income levels? What are the traffic patterns? Where does the public transport system run? All this and more should be considered when placing your new business, and the results of these findings should also be incorporated into your business plan.

Finalise the pre-work. This means that you obtain permits and licenses, if needed, and begin shopping for your actual location, if you’ll have one. Many businesses start from someone’s home, but there are other times you’ll want the credibility that a separate storefront gives you. If you will require a loan, now is the time to polish that business plan and perhaps even have an expert look it over before submitting it to the bank.

Once everything is ready, start interviewing any employees you plan to hire, purchase your supplies and equipment, and begin outfitting the space you’ll use to start your business. A website is critical. Whether you build it yourself or pay an expert, it must look clean, professional, and be easy to find. There are free website-design programs that can help you look professional and keep you on budget.

Once you’re open for business, make sure your products or services are all that you advertise and more, and put a premium on customer service. People remember a good experience they’ve had when shopping for a product or service. You want to be the business they remember with a smile, because that’s what will ensure your future success.

Here at Silicon Beach Training we’re immensely proud of the quality of training that we provide – and we love teaching other people how to deliver great training sessions too, via our Train the Trainer course.

Knowing your subject matter is only part of being able to deliver great training. Understanding how adults learn, engaging with them effectively, and planning your training session properly are all essential to ensuring that attendees understand and retain what you teach them.

In this video, filmed on one of our Train the Trainer courses – our trainer Mary guides delegates through the stages of planning and designing an effective training session.

We’ve summarised the video below with some great tips on how to plan your own session.

These are edited highlights of this section of our workshop. We cover a lot more besides on out 2-day train the trainer course here in Brighton, Sussex – so why not come along and hone your training technique?

Train the Trainer: Planning a 10 Minute Training Session – Top Tips

When you plan a training session, its not just about what subjects you’re going to cover when. A well planned training session will provide the following elements for each stage:

Content

Questioning Techniques

Activities

During our Train the Trainer course each delegate is asked to deliver and refine their own short training session. This is broadly broken down as follows:

Introduction

The introduction of the training session is about acquisition. You introduce the topic, introduce yourself, and most importantly introduce the delegates.

Ask delegates to introduce themselves before you introduce yourself - give them your name, but don’t start boring them with your own background and experience until they’ve had a chance to speak. Asking the delegates to introduce themselves first puts the focus on the learners, gets their vocal cords going and breaks the ice. It’ll also help you to understand their experience so that you can adapt your training session as needed to the learners’ needs.

During the introduction, find out as a minimum:

Delegates’ Names

Their Jobs

Their Existing Experience

Use round robin and overall questioning to do this (we cover a range of questioning techniques in detail on the course!)

Timetable

Now introduce the timetable - its very important that delegates understand from the start of the course what’s on offer, as they can then make clear in their minds from the beginning how the training will relate to them and how they will use it. At this stage learners will engage with the contract of the learning. If you don’t bother to establish the agenda and dive straight in to the content – the focus is all on you as the trainer.

Ask delegates if they are happy with the timetable. Is it what they were expecting, and is there anything missing that they would like to cover in addition?

Find out the delegates’ aims and write them up on a flip chart or wall for reference throughout the course.

If there are practical exercises within the course that delegates will need to prepare for (and if it’s going to be an effective course there should be!) they need to know when these will occur so that they don’y get taken by surprise later on.

Learning Section

You can now move on to covering the actual content of the training…

Objectives

Set out the objectives for each session. It’s equally important to find out delegates’ existing experience of that topic before you cover it – as some of the attendees may have knowledge that is beneficial to the group in addition to what you were going to deliver (or may have approached things in a slightly different way). Not all of the learning that takes place on a course comes from the trainer – the delegates can learn a lot from each others experience too!

Again – you can use the overall and round robin questioning techniques to get this information from the delegates.

Starting with an overall question to the whole group will help you to identify and activists in the group – those people who can’t wait to share their experiences. However then going round the group with round robin questions will ensure that everyone’s voice get’s heard.

Learning

Having set the objectives, you can now move on to the actual learning.

Include group work and exercises which will engage the activists and pragmatists in the group. At the same time, the theorists and reflectors in your group will still have their needs met, as you have established a good structure, timetable and objectives in your introduction.

Overall and return questioning techniques work well in the learning section

Summary / Review / Application

It’s very important to review content at the end of each session. More importantly, it should be the delegates who summarise this – not you – so that you can be sure that they the group has understood what they have learned.

This also allows an opportunity for delegates to reflect on what they have learned and the application of that in the real world, rather than just assimilating knowledge.

This is the only point where you should use the pick one questioning technique, as it depends on them having obtained knowledge during the learning section.

Personal Objectives

At the very end of your training session, you need to refer back to the original learners’ aims that you established during the introduction section. If you have planned and delivered your training session effectively, you should never find that there are any delegates who’s objectives have not been met.

By using well planned activities and questioning techniques throughout your course, you will ensure that delegates of all learning styles, reflectors, theorists, activists and pragmatists, have their learning objectives met and are able to apply what they have learned to their own requirements.

Learn More

What are Active Listening Skills?

“A good listener tries to understand thoroughly what the other person is saying. In the end he may disagree sharply, but before he disagrees, he wants to know exactly what it is…” (Kenneth A. Wells)

Listening is one of the most useful skills we can have. How well we listen has a major impact on how we do our job, and on the quality of our relationships with others.

Active Listening intentionally focuses on who you are listening to, whether in a group or one-on-one, in order to understand what he or she is saying. As the listener, you should then be able to repeat back in your own words what they have said to their satisfaction. This does not mean you agree with, but rather understand, what they are saying.

Active Listening is a key business skill, and is covered on our Management Skills training course as well as our Leadership training course in Brighton, Sussex. We also offer a course specifically on Active Listening Skills which can be arranged on a private or on-site basis if you want to focus on this topic alone.

Active listening is a way of listening and responding to another person that improves mutual understanding. Often when people talk to each other, they don’t listen attentively. They are often distracted, half listening, half thinking about something else.

For example: When people are engaged in a conflict, they are often busy formulating a response to what is being said. They assume that they have heard what their opponent is saying many times before, so rather than paying attention; they focus on how they can respond to win the argument.

Are you a good listener? Think about your relationships with the people in your life – your boss, colleagues, subordinates, best friend, and spouse. If asked, what would they say about how well you listened? Do you often misunderstand assignments or only vaguely remember what people have said to you. If so, you may need to improve your listening skills. The first step is to understand how the listening process works.

Four Steps to Active Listening

Hearing. At this stage, you simply pay attention to make sure you hear the message.

Interpretation. If you fail to interpret a speaker’s word correctly it may lead to a misunderstanding.

Evaluation. Decide what to do with the information you have received.

Respond. This is a verbal or visual response that lets the speaker know whether you have gotten the message and what your reaction is.

Active Listening Tips:

Don’t talk-listen. People like to have a chance to get their own ideas or opinions across. A good listener lets them do it.

Don’t jump to conclusions. Many people will tune out a speaker when they think they have the general idea of the conversation.

Ask questions. It’s perfectly acceptable to say, “Do you mean….?” or “Did I understand you to say….?”

Overlook a speech problem, a twitch, or sexist language. Paying too much attention to these types of distractions can break your concentration.

Keep an open mind. The point of listening it to gain new information.

Listen to others’ points of view and ideas. It could turn out to be fascinating.

Provide feedback. Make eye contact, nod your head and if appropriate, interject a comment such as “I see,” etc.

Jennifer Tarjanyi from MyTrainingManager recently attended our Blogging Training and Social Media Training courses, and we took the opportunity to catch up with her about what they are doing to help businesses in the south, and how their new MyTrainingManager service can help managers to make the most of their training budget by choosing training that is appropriate to their needs.

In addition to online marketing courses, Silicon Beach Training offers a wide range of Management Training, Leadership Training, Appraisals Training and Project Management Training courses (including PRINCE2 Training and MSP Training) in Brighton, Sussex. We will soon be launching a competition in partnership with MyTraining Manager to win a free course at Silicon Beach – more details to follow soon…!

Read on for our interview with Jennifer about the new MyTrainingManager service

Interview with Jennifer Tarjanyi from MyTrainingManager…

Tell us a little about MyTrainingManager, how did it come about?

Our advisers have been out and about supporting Small Businesses for the last 5 years offering government funded support, and time and time again our clients were telling us that they wanted more long term support – anything from sourcing training to helping with appraisals or conducting staff surveys and action planning to improve motivation and morale.

This sort of thing is  in particular demand in the current economic climate for 3 reasons;

1.) Staff aren’t moving on, they’re staying in jobs which perhaps don’t inspire them for fear of moving on into the unknown,

2.) Employers often don’t have the funds to spend on incentivising and increasing pay, they need to look at other ways to engage their teams.

3.) People are making cut-backs. Many small businesses can’t justify paying someone a salary to manage their Learning and Development. Our fees start from £195 pm which is more affordable.

When you are providing a “fee” service, there is a limit to the amount of time you can give. MyTrainingManager is a cost effective way in which we can help longer term.

What sort of companies come to you for assistance?

All sorts! The main thing we hear though is that owners & managers don’t have the time or the experience to dedicate to looking after their people. That’s where we come in!

What types of training are most in need for your clients, and what did they use the Leadership & Management grants towards mostly?

Leadership Training is a big one – most people are in leadership positions either through promotion or because they started their own business. Although they may know their sector or product inside out, managing people can be pretty tough, even for natural leaders, a bit of underpinning knowledge goes a long way to increase their confidence.

Social Media Training is also becoming really popular.

How soon will we know more about the next round of training funding and when will it be available?

There will be more Leadership and Management funding coming out in the next few weeks, although details will be announced shortly.

UPDATE – The new Leadership & Management Training Grants are NOW AVAILABLE.

We have seen you are embracing Social Media and using it to communicate with your clients. Why is this?

We know that people in business love to network, increasingly we have seen this going online. Our advisers have a great deal of knowledge and expertise as well as resources to share, social media allows us to do this effectively

Why do you think Social Media is becoming such an important marketing tool?

I think the way people buy is really changing. People have always “bought people” but now more so than ever, the chatty nature of social media really engages people.

Become a fan of MyTrainingManager on Facebook and follow Jen on Twitter to keep up to date with developments
