Jess Stephens, Managing Director at TagPoints blew away the judges to win the Silicon Beach Training Startup Competition in Brighton, Tues 22nd April 2014.
Competing against two other strong finalists in Sweta Chattopadhyay (Localfunded) and Jenni Macdonald (Precision Paraplanning), Jess gave a strong presentation highlighting the potential for TagPoints to grow which clearly impressed our judging panel; Darren Fell (Crunch), Caraline Brown (Midnight PR), Lisa Reynolds (Let Me Do That For You) & Mike Herd (Sussex Innovation Centre).
The judges were "blown away by the capability of the business and how fast it could scale" and while impressed by the other finalists, TagPoints were the clear winner on the day.
TagPoints now has the support of sponsors Silicon Beach Training, Crunch Accounting, Midnight PR and Clear Business Development to help grow the business and realise their ambitious plans.
We hope that you enjoyed reading about all the startups on our shortlist (check out part 1 if not), but now it's time to announce the Top 5 startups who are through to our grand final.
Our shortlist was sent to our esteemed judging panel - Mike Herd (Sussex Innovation Centre), Caraline Brown (Midnight Communications), Lisa Reynolds (Let Me Do That For You), Darren Fell (Crunch Accounting) and Lee Mansfield (Life Media Group) - who then sent back their individual top 5. We tallied the scores and are delighted to announce that the following startups are through to the final...

- Precision Paraplanning
- SNAP Solutions
The final will take place at Silicon Beach Training on Tuesday April 22. Each finalist will have five minutes to present their business plan followed by a 10 minute Q & A session with the judges. We've got our fingers crossed for some Apprentice/Dragon's Den style grilling.
The eventual winner will receive over £12,000 of business services from our sponsors, including:
- £10,000 worth of training at Silicon Beach Training
- One year subscription to Crunch Accounting worth over £900
- £1000 of PR consultancy with Midnight Communications
- £1000 of business strategy consultancy with Clear Business Development
All of the finalists are of a high calibre so we recommend keeping an eye on every business in the future. Here's a bit more about what they do...
Localfunded "is an innovative, reward-based, crowdfunding platform, focusing on local projects that impact their communities positively throughout the UK."
They only launched their service last week and already have a number of projects up and running with backers.
We particularly like the Purley Festival project which features some interesting funding options. So far most people have gone for 5 burgers and 5 drinks for £20!
Pavilion Entertainment "is an innovative, reward-based, crowdfunding platform, focusing on local projects that impact their communities positively throughout the UK."
One of the businesses that caught our attention at Silicon Beach and also hooked the judges, Pavilion Entertainment seeks to kickstart the music scene in Brighton with a local radio station, live video, community blog, magazine and live events.
Precision Paraplanning "provide high quality outsourced paraplanning solutions to Financial Advisers."
Compared to some of our wackier entries, Precision Paraplanning have a solid, serious business plan with a clear vision moving forward. Their entry really impressed our judges as a potential success story in the future.
SNAP "is the first ever consumer driven Social Nightlife Mobile solution giving consumers a fun, rewarding and hassle-free experience when visiting a Bar, Pub or Club (BPCs)."
Mobile is still a massively growing industry, and SNAP are hoping to corner a market that hasn't got any main players yet - nightlife. The SNAP app allows users to pay for and order drinks without queuing - an attactive prospect on a busy Friday night! There are played incentive schemes to get new users on board.
TagPoints "is the most exciting and creative loyalty scheme ever to be designed for a mobile device."
Another mobile app startup, TagPoints want to make physical stores mobile-friendly with their SaaS platform which allows businesses to intelligently target customers.

"All our goods are infused with premium alcohols from spirits, liquors to champagnes. Sweet Hangovers is currently run from a private home-based kitchen."
