How to Enter
There are 3 ways to enter and each one gives you another chance of winning:
Thank you to everyone who entered our Movement themed photo competition. It was a huge success with perhaps the highest standard of entries we’ve ever had to our Flickr group!
A big thank you too to our judge; acclaimed Brighton photographer Jean-Luc Brouard as well as to our partners and joint competition sponsors Brighton Media Centre.
So here is our winner and runners up in video format or scroll down to see them without the musical accompaniment!
We had some great entries from near and afar but there could only be one winner so we’ll let Jean-Luc tell you about his experience deciding who should get our prize of a 2-day course (anything from Photoshop workshops to Social Media Training) and a day in Brighton Media Centre’s professional studio.
Win a full day in the Brighton Media Centre Studioto use as you like, a 2-day Photoshop course at Silicon Beach to learn how to edit your images (alternative courses will be offered to those who already know photoshop) and a print of your choice to show off the finished product. All you need to supply is your own camera, tripod and subject! It’s a fantastic prize for both professional and amateur photographers alike. More details of the grand prize can be found below, and there are also prizes for the top 4 runners up.
The ‘Movement‘ theme allows you to be as creative as possible, with licence to interpret ‘movement’ as you like – we’re expecting some really interesting images as a result.
Judging the competition is local photographer Jean-Luc Brouard – a favourite here at Silicon Beach and popular in the Brighton Photography community. Read on to find out how to enter, but make sure you read the terms & conditions first.

In addition to the great prizes on offer, you will also gain a lot of exposure through our Twitter, Facebook and Google+ accounts – a great way to get your name out there!
What is the Theme of the Photography Competition?
The theme is ‘Movement‘, which is deliberately open to interpretation. It could be the movement of the subject or the camera, it could be a subject known for its movement (or lack of) or any idea at all that you have related to movement and photography.
How do I Enter the Movement Photography Competition?
It’s incredibly easy to enter the competition, simply upload your entry to our dedicated Flickr group. If you don’t have an account just enter in the basic information to set one up, but make sure you use your real contact details or we won’t be able to let you know if you’ve won.
You can only enter one image, so think carefully before you upload because you only get one chance.
We would prefer it if you entered photographs taken specifically for the competition itself.
What do I Win?
As well as a fantastic complete photography experience for the grand prize we also have some prizes for the runners up. View the full details below.
Grand Prize
1 day studio shoot in the Brighton Media Centre Studio including:
One full colour print (up to 26″ x 17″) on an Epson Stylus Pro 4880 (unframed)
What is not included in the prize?
The winner must supply their own camera, tripod and whatever they want to shoot on the day.
They are also required to pay their own travel and accommodation costs if required.
Runner-Up
The top 4 runners-up will receive an unframed high quality full colour print of their entry.
Who is Judging the ‘Movement’ Photo Competition?
After heading overseas to Los Angeles for our last competition judge, we decided to stay local this time and ask one of our favourite Brighton photographers – Jean-Luc Brouard.
“Based in Brighton Jean-Luc provides images for a range of clients in the areas of Portraiture, Fashion and Still life.
More than happy to work in a studio his true love is location based work, where his willingness to go almost anywhere combined with a passion for controlled lighting means nowhere is out of bounds when it comes to getting the right shot.”
When does the ‘Movement’ Photography Competition End?
The competition is now open, and runs until Friday 18th January at 5pm GMT.
Judging will then commence until Friday 25th January, and we will announce the winner shortly afterwards.
Please make sure you are contactable around that time, or let us know in advance if you aren’t. If we cannot contact the winner within 48 hours of the judge’s decision, the prize will move on to the second place entry. Read the rest of "Movement Photography Competition"
Thanks for all the entries to our Summer photo competition – 74 in total – making our first Facebook photo competition a great success. It’s a new format for us and so it was good to see it embraced (despite some grumbles about the voting system) and we particularly enjoyed the high numbers of local Brighton entries.
The votes are in and we’ve confirmed that the winner is…
Lauren Hazzard with an astounding 80 votes!
Here’s Lauren’s winning photo:
Lauren Hazzard | 80 votes
Lauren is now booked in to come on a Photoshop course in 2013, so we look forward to seeing how she uses that to help with her photography in the future.
If you didn’t win or missed the entry date then don’t fear, our next photo competition is already in the pipeline with a truly special prize up for grabs.
Win a 2-day Photoshop Workshop in Brighton worth over £500 by entering your top summer themed photo to our Facebook Summer Photography Competition.
As we’ve only had one week of summer this year, we thought it would be a great time to ask you all to show off your best summer photos! Interpret the theme as you like, enter your summer holiday snaps or show off just how wet it’s been in the UK!
Summer Photography Competition
Image by slightly everything on Flickr
We’ve purposely chosen a broad ‘Summer’ theme for this competition so that you can get creative. We don’t just want pictures of ice cream on the beach (although those are welcome!) we want you to show off what summer means to you in a photo.
Think back to your childhood, think back to a time when summer meant sunshine and not flooding, think of exotic summer holidays and British staycations: whatever springs to mind when you think of summer.
To enter, you simply have to visit the Silicon Beach Training Facebook Page and click on ‘Photo Competition’ or go straight to the Entry Form! Remember that you must like our page before you can enter.
The winner is the photo with the most votes on our Facebook competition, but there will also be some honourable mentions for our favourite entries. We will be on the look out for anyone who tries to trick the system with fake votes so don’t try anything sneaky!
The competition ends on the 27th October but we recommend you get your entry in early to maximise the number of votes. We’ll be promoting the competition but we recommend you do some promotion yourself! If you need any help with social media our Ultimate Guide to Social Media will give you some ideas to start, but our 2-day Social Media workshop is also ideal for photographers who want to increase their presence and build a fanbase.
Our ‘SEO is like…’ competition finished on Friday and we had some great comments. The winners have all been notified and their Top SEO Trumps packs are on their way! As so many entries had us chuckling in the office we thought we should share our favourites!
Somewhat surprising was the negative mood running through the entries. While meant to be taken with a pinch of salt (they’re jokes after all!) some of the comments are very dismaying coming from those within the industry. Others suggest that SEO means treading a fine line between great success and doomed failure.
If you want to know who famous faces are in our packs, we’ve put together a Google Plus circle so you can follow what they have to say.
We like to dispel this myth that SEO is frustrating and cause as much pain as gain. Our SEO course will show you that you don’t have to try to trick the engines, bang your head against a brick wall in pursuit of higher rankings or pay out thousands without knowing what you’re paying for. In one day you’ll learn SEO from the start – from technical optimisation to those White Hat techniques that Google loves. We do cover the latest tips and tricks and emphasise the importance of social media and content, but we also advise that any ‘quick gain’ approach is likely to have consequences!
If you find yourself agreeing with a lot of the comments below then take a look at our comprehensive guide to SEO for Start-Ups and Ultimate Guide to Social Media Marketing. Both resources should help you focus your SEO campaigns, but if you’re looking to really expand your knowledge you should come down to Brighton for our SEO and Social Media courses – we have some great packages on offer!
Read on to hear what our readers think ‘SEO is like…’ and what we think you can learn from the comments…

The ‘Street’ theme is open to your own interpretation, just get your feet on the street and start snapping!
If you are after some inspiration have a look at Eric Kim’s work, Eric is a well known and respected Street Photographer from LA.
The successful winner will also gain lots of exposure through our Twitter and Facebook accounts. Follow us on Twitter to see if you’re mentioned as our own weekly favourite entry! It’s worth following Heather on Google+ too (the photographer of the image above).
