5 Ways to Communicate Assertively

top-tipsBeing assertive is not always the easiest thing to achieve and it is often the case that it does not come naturally. We offer a comprehensive 2-day Assertiveness & Confidence Building training course – however a good grasp of the basics will make it a lot easier, here is an outline of the basics of assertive communication:

1. Always try to keep eye contact, this will help the person who you are talking to know that you have a genuine interest in them and that you are giving them your full attention.

2. Be aware of the effects of non verbal communication, your voice and gestures play a huge part in how you are interpreted by another person.  Your voice should be well modulated in tone and your gestures appropriate and well timed. This also applies to the context in which you are speaking, why, when and how you speaking can be even more important than what you are saying.

3. Take criticism as comfortably as you can, there is no point in getting flustered or angry, try to acknowledge what is being said and try and learn from it. Similarly any criticism that you give should not be malicious and should always be as constructive as possible.

4.Be self confident, believe what you have to say matters, without self belief you will never manage to become assertive.

5. Know your stuff, it is a lot easier to gain self confidence if you know what you have to say is relevant and correct. If you have a solid foundation of knowledge to work from then you will find it a lot easier to be assertive.
