Brainstorming is a good method of collecting ideas and opinions from different people as well as helping to build on them. Brainstorming, if used correctly, can be a great tool to make sure that everyone is involved in the project and let them have a say. In order to be able to get the most out of brainstorming there are a few guidelines which you should try to follow:
You want a free flowing and creative atmosphere. Ask questions of the less confident/vocal to get them to open up. Try not to let one person dominate.
The idea is too get as many different views on how to go about the project as possible. Your les likely to miss something and everyone involved will have a better understanding of not only the project but also how the team wishes to go about it.
Write down as much as you can, any information or views given in the barnstorming session should always be made a note out of as it may come in handy later but also it will help you keep track of where you are.
It is not a competition, if someone can take someone’s preexisting idea and run further with it then that is fine and should be encouraged. It doesn’t matter whose idea it was in the first place, what matters is helping the team and project as a whole.
This is not the time for any evaluations or debates; the idea of a brainstorming session is that it is supposed to be a short quick fire episode that gets everyone thinking and contributing ideas. This process will be severely hampered if everyone has to stop and debate or defend their idea after they give it. Not only this but it will also stifle the creative flow because people won’t be as willing to put their ideas forward.
